You’ve heard the saying, “work smarter, not harder.” Consider these tips on how to talk to your manager about a promotion.
1. Present your efforts.
If you've brought in client after client or feel that your work has had a solid impact on the company, it's time to show it.1 Creating a visual display helps people quickly see exactly how much you've done for the job. Use pie charts or graphs to show your accomplishments over a period of time, itemizing different types of responsibilities you handle in your position.
2. Make your boss's job easier.
Of course lightening the workload for your boss will make you stand out.2 Make your boss look good and recognition is often the result. Begin to help him or her with tasks subtly. Make him or her notice that you're competent at handling some of their work. Soon, those same duties will be yours, along with some kudos.
3. Stay positive.
Things get stressful in every office space, small or large. Keeping your cool during these times will often show your worth to the company. If you're the type to panic or let the stress affect your work performance, you might not get that promotion. However, if you're able to remain positive and spread that cheer onto fellow coworkers of yours, you'll be appreciated for your efforts. Positive employees also embrace criticism as they view it as a way to work toward a better version of themselves.
4. Avoid company gossip.
Some employees just love to get involved with any gossip floating around or spread rumors themselves. If you're interested in getting a promotion, stay well above the chitchat. If management gets word that you're talking about them or fellow colleagues, it speaks negatively about your character as a loyal employee and friend. Staying away proves that you're trustworthy and able to handle managerial positions.
5. Display that you can handle company issues.
If you're able to prove to your boss that you're a problem solver, you might be considered more quickly for a promotion. Keep track of the problems you’ve helped to solve and make sure you can give at least three solid examples to prove your worth.
These five tips can help you stand out as a candidate for promotion within your company. Good luck!
